Great experience at the Rotax World Final Valencia 2014

November 2014

Sandy is looking to focus on the many positives to take from the Rotax World Championships in Valencia.

The amazing site of nearly 300 brand new karts lined up to perfection on the circuit for the kart raffle was a sign of just how good the atmosphere would be for the week long Rotax World Finals. After some excellent conditions for testing Sandy went on to qualify 18th out of 72 entrants in the Junior class. This gave him a start position of P10 for heat 1 and a start position P9 for heats 2 and 3.

Heat 1.... was a closely fought race with Sandy mixing with the front runners eventually finishing 7th with fastest lap in the bag!

Heat 2.... was similar to heat 1 and after a close race Sandy finished in 6th position, two strong consistent results.

Heat 3.... Sandy had a terrific start and after a brilliant move on the outside of turn 3 on the first lap Sandy slotted into 4th position and went on to pick off the front runners one by one to comfortably take the heat win.

Three excellent heat finishes added up to give Sandy an excellent starting position of P5 on for the pre-final.

Saturday's weather took a real turn for the worst, the track was completely flooded for the start of the pre-final with the down pour not easing at all. The red flag came out after the karts were struggling even to make it around the circuit at any pace for lap one. A decision was taken to cancel the pre-final and go straight to the grand final at Midday. Sandy had a good start but struggled for power exiting the corners in the wet and fell back to 7th position before battling and changing positions for 7th, 8th and 9th. A strong 9th place finish looked as if it was on the cards until after more heavy rain had fallen, Sandy aquaplaned off of the circuit into the muddy waters whilst trying to hold position on the last half lap. This resulted in him crossing the line in 25th position, a finish that certainly didn't reflect the excellent pace that Sandy had shown all week.

"I am determined to take the positives from this fantastic experience of competing in the Rotax World Finals. In the end the final did not work out for me this time, but the great heat 3 win along with the fastest lap in heat one and the excellent finishes in all the heats, I have to be really happy with. Thanks to Steve and Jamie at RL Racing, sponsors Tunnocks, Stirfresh, SGM Distribution, Smartcomm and to all who have supported me!"
