Hard fought Top ten finish for Sandy after disappointing Euro qualifier

8 April 2014

(Genk: 2nd-6th April 2014)

This was Sandy's first time at the Genk Circuit in Belgium and sunny blue skies greeted everyone to this Rotax Max Euro Challenge Round. He soon settled into the demanding circuit during testing on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning. Qualifying on the Friday afternoon however didn't flow so well for Sandy and he finished the session 19th in group and 37th overall from 72 drivers. Just two tenths of a second would have made a huge difference in this hugely competitive grid. Sandy would go on to start all three of the 7 lap heats from P19 on the grid.

Heat 1 was a terrific drive from Sandy with a good start and an excellent first lap he managed to work his way back to a fantastic 5th position.
Heat 2 again was a solid drive to 11th and this was followed by another consistent performance in Heat 3 to finish 13th, this gave Sandy P16 for the Pre-final.

Sandy's Pre-final drive was really difficult as he fell back to 25th at turn one after the outside row was forced wide, but he went on to recover to 13th place to give him a well earned place in the final on the inside grid slot of P13.

The final was hugely entertaining to watch with really close competitive racing, Sandy at one point was running as high as 6th position and after some really tough racing eventually finished off his first event outside of the UK in a well earned and hard fought 10th position.

Sandy Mitchell:" This was a really enjoyable experience. After my disappointing qualifying session I am really happy with my recovery drive to finish 10th overall, I would like to thank everyone at RL Racing Department and Cream Engines, my sponsors SGM Distribution, Smartcomm, Tunnocks and Stirfresh along with everyone at the YRDA"
